Load Range E tires: If you know, you know.
But if you don’t know, we’ll explain.
Tires have a ton of information on their sidewalls. They have numbers and letters representing points on several charts and indexes regarding speed capacity, weight capacity, height, width, width to height ratio, ply, and vehicle type.
It can be a little much if you don’t know what you’re looking at. When you break it down, it isn’t too much to handle.
If you’re reading this article, we’re going to assume you know what Load Range E means/. You’re probably looking to buy some for your truck already, and you need to know the best options on the market, not your speed index rating (even though that is very important to know as well).
So, we’re going to skip all the jargon because you don’t need it, do you? Drivers with E tires don’t need the fluff and frill, so we’re going to jump right into our list.
Here are our five favorite E-range tires for 2021, all available right now on Rent A Wheel.
Our list isn’t in any particular order, but we do want to start strong. The Toyo Tire Company has been making killer tires since 1945, and they are keeping the industry on its toes to this day.
The Toyo Open Country A/T IIs were considered top of their class and a fan favorite of drivers all over, but the team at Toyo wasn’t satisfied. Despite claiming that they could push their A/T series even further, there were some doubts that Toyo could improve on perfection.
But here we are, looking at the wicked Open Country A/T IIIs. These hybrid tread tires are monsters off the beaten path and reliably smooth on the road.
With a wide tread design, the Toyo Open CountryA/T IIIs cut through mud, snow, gravel, and just about anything else that gets in your way.
Speaking of snow, these tires have a Three Peak Mountain Snowflake stamp, meaning they’re rated for intense snow conditions. If Santa replaced his sleigh for a truck, he’d probably have a set of these underneath him.
Are they as quiet on the freeway as some of the others on this list? Probably not. But if you’re looking for a badass set of tires that can climb just about any mountain, these are the tires for you.
Do you already trust the Toyo brand, but you aren’t looking for something that can conquer mountains?
The Toyo Open Country H/T IIs are a great choice for drivers who need tires to live a long life, carry big loads, and comfortably get around town.
These Open Country H/T IIs improve on the original H/T’s durability with a new symmetrical tread design that keeps the blocks from wearing off balance. That’s not even mentioning the interlocking levels of tread that become exposed as the tires get older, maintaining high levels of tractions for years after purchase.
Toyo built these tires with a professional driver in mind. Road noise is minimal, and the braking is in a league of its own regardless of wet or dry conditions.
While these tires aren’t made to go off-roading, they don't crumble under pressure when the time comes. The Open Country H/T IIs perform great in messy environments like slush and mud.
All in all, these Toyo tires are a great match for truck drivers that need tires that take the road as seriously as they do.
Nitto Ridge Grappler
These aren’t a Toyo, but they’re still made by the Toyo Tire Company. The Nitto Ridge Grapplers stand next to Toyo tires as fan favorites, but we see a few differences in where they excel.
The Ridge Grapplers’ tread design is a bit narrower and deeper than the Toyo A/T III’s. This gives these tires a great amount of control off-roading and adds a bit more comfort on the freeway. Less road noise means a smoother ride home.
What’s the compromise? We lose the Three Peak Mountain stamp on the Ridge Grapplers, meaning they aren’t rated to take you through the same intense snow conditions as some of the other items on this list.
If you don’t live somewhere that regularly gets intense snow, this becomes less of a compromise and more of a shift in priorities.
If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. That seems to be the slogan over at Michelin, and we respect it. The LTX A/T II is the only all-terrain tire Michelin makes, and it’s been around for a few years.
These tires aren’t for a driver looking to get their truck dirty every weekend. These are for the driver that’s putting miles and miles on their vehicle and need tires to stand the test of time.
You don’t get a lot of bells and whistles with the Michelin LTX A/T IIs, and for some of you, that might sound just right. They don’t have the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake stamp, and they don’t have aggressive shoulder blocks for cutting through muddy trails.
These Michelins are noticeably quieter than some of the more robust off-roading options we have on this list. The rubber is built to resist dry rot the more that they’re driven.
As we said, Michelin has offered the LTX A/T IIs for quite some time without creating a replacement. That’s because they nailed what they were going for on the first try: reliability on the road.
The Falken Wildpeak A/T III Ws are another fan favorite. Falken has been crushing it lately, even winning first place in the brutal King of the Hammers competition in 2020. They have a great video on their win if you’re looking for some off-road inspiration.
The Wildpeak A/T III Ws stand out amongst their line as an all-around great tire for most conditions.
They designed these tires with snow in mind. The W in the name stands for Winter, in case you don’t believe us. These Wildpeaks have the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake stamp to prove it.
Not only do they have the stamp, but these Falken tires also use a proprietary rubber compound with strong resistance to even the coldest of temperatures, making sure your tires don’t get brittle or wear faster than they should.
One minor complaint we have is about the tread design’s strengths and weaknesses. While snow is no problem for the Wildpeaks, mud tends to get packed in due to the tightly designed treads.
Not to say that they completely fall apart in the mud, but this does mean they don’t perform as well in the mud as some of our other favorites, unfortunately.
Otherwise the Falken Wildpeak A/T III Ws perform exceptionally well. To top it off, they tend to be a bit more affordable compared to some of the other options on this list.
At Rent A Wheel, we make it even easier to afford the perfect tires for any condition and any vehicle.
There are a lot of great tires on the market. Some have been around for a long time, and some are just getting started.
As you can tell, picking a set of reliable tires that meet all of your needs depends on what you’re planning on doing with them.
If you’re going to be driving through the snowy mountains and need the power to get through the roughest of conditions safely, the Toyo A/T IIIs or the Falken Wildpeak A/T III Ws might be your best bet.
Are you more concerned about having a smooth ride that will survive years of freeway driving without that obnoxious road noise? The Michelin A/T IIs or the Toyo Open Road H/Ts could be the tires for you.
